Sliven’s theatre traditions began 140 years ago when the first theatre stage was unveiled in the town. In 1918 Zora Community Center (Chitalishte ‘Zora’) became home to the town’s first professional troupe. Stefan Kirov Drama Theatre has been a professional state theatre for 50 years now.

The new building of the theatre was built in 1986. It has a big auditorium (484 seats), a chamber hall (121 seats), a ballet hall, a spacious two-level lobby with a bar for the spectators and an administrative part.

The theatre’s repertoire consists of classical works by world playwrights as well as a number of Bulgarian classical authors. Its company has toured in Germany, Austria, former Czechoslovakia, Georgia, Slovenia, Macedonia and others.
