"Monument of Freedom" Shipka

Rating

Shipka Peak is located in the Balkan Mountains, at an altitude of 1326 m. On top of the peak, the majestic “Monument of freedom” was erected in 1934 - in honor of the heroes who died for the Liberation of Bulgaria. During the Russo-Turkish War, the crucial battles between the troops of the General Nikolai Stoletov and the Ottoman units took place at Shipka.

Between 21 and 26 August 1877, the Bulgarian volunteer corps firmly resisted the vast Ottoman forces and managed to hold positions until the arrival of Russian reinforcements. The heroism of the volunteers was immortalized in Ivan Vazov’s eternal poem "The volunteers at Shipka" from the poetic saga "Epic of the Forgotten."
