The Plane Tree Alley, Varshets

Rating

The Plane Tree Alley (Aleyata s chinarite) is one of the emblems of the northwestern Bulgarian town of Varshets. It is most famous with its healing mineral springs and known as the oldest spa resort in the country. The alley with its century-old trees uniquely contributes to the worthiness of the place. It is a pedestrian street about 2 kilometres long. It begins at the town centre and goes as far as the Zanozhene district. Its trees are almost 100 years of age. Its huge crowns twist their branches together and during the green periods form a marvelous tunnel above the alley.

After the green arch there are unique multicoloured villas dating from 1920-1930 situated along the alley. Back in those times the villas were owned by affluent Bulgarians. The romantic alley has been a traditional walking spot ever since that time. The little houses bear the beautiful names of women and flowers. Today some of them are open for visitors and even offer accommodation for the night.
