St. Yoan Letni Chapel

Rating

The St. Yoan Letni Chapel is located in a captivating place in the beautiful surroundings of the Pchelina Dam. The small temple looks as if it has fallen from the sky and landed on a rocky headland, sticking out above the waters of the dam. It provides a breathtaking and beautiful view.

In the past the church existed because of the village of Pchelintsi which gave its place to the dam in the 70s of the last century. The people from the neighbouring villages tell a legend about a boy from Pchelintsi who died after pushing a stone from the chapel down into the chasm above the former river. It was not until the boy’s parents took the stone back to the chapel that his body was found.

The temple dates back to the 14th century and, for good or bad, its impressive age is evident. Its authenticity can be seen in every stone. Unfortunately, little remains of the former murals. However, the foundations and the building itself have been preserved and so has the unique altar that is actually a big piece of stone with ornaments engraved in it. The chapel is maintained by volunteers. Inside it is clean, cosy and full of nostalgia for long gone times.
