Sand Dunes in the locality of Perla

Rating

‘Sand Dunes in the locality of Perla’ – or, in short, Perla Sand Dunes – is a natural site with an area of 24 hectares. The dunes are located north of Primorsko and are easily accessible from the town on foot. They are situated between the beach strip and the Stamopolu lagoon.

In 1994 the dunes were declared a natural site because of their rich variety of plant species. Here you can see different species of the so called psammophytes – sand-loving plants. 80 different plant species have been identified here, part of which are enlisted in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The dunes itself, with the dark green little bushes scattered here and there, make an exceptionally beautiful sight. Some of them are as tall as 19m.

In immediate proximity to the dunes there’s communist leader Todor Zhivkov’s former summer residence – a white building that hardly reminds us of its past glory. Although you can take a peek through the windows at its empty interior, the residence is guarded and isn’t open for visitors.
