The Virtual Reality Reconstructions in Living Danube Limes Project

The Living Danube Limes (LDL) project will develop a website and mobile application aiming to present the archeological sites of Roman fortifications, fortresses, and settlements along the Danube Region in an interactive way. Approximately 350 sites will be included, and 8 pilot sites from partner countries will be presented through virtual reality (VR) reconstructions. The coordinator for Bulgaria, National Tourism Cluster "Bulgarian Guide" (NTC-BG), is responsible for the Bulgarian pilot site Bononia/Vidin, which together with the remains and finds in Sinagovtsi and Ratiaria/Archar, have the potential for huge tourist development of Vidin Region in cultural and historical aspect.

So far, detailed geophysical research by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology, Austria, has been conducted at five pilot sites: Bononia-Bulgaria, Iza-Slovakia, Matrica-Hungary, Kopachevo-Croatia, and Sacidava-Romania. These sites are 3D modeled from 3D scanned point clouds and two of them - Gunzenhausen, Germany and Lederata, Serbia were prepared by the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, thanks to pre-sent 2D visual materials, mostly CAD drawings, terrain images, sketches, and graphics.

The goal of the VR reconstructions developed under LDL is to increase the tourist attractiveness of all eight pilot sites involved in the project by presenting an additional visual information layer, which currently cannot be seen by visitors on site and showing another modern, fascinating, and accessible view of the already discovered and undiscovered remains.

Two of the first rendered panoramas from the sites in Gunzenhausen and Lederata can now be seen in a test version of the web interface:

We look forward to seeing the result for the Bulgarian pilot site Bononia/Vidin. Follow our channels for details!
