International Festival of the National costume – the village of Jeravna

Rating

“Bulgarian traditional costume” is a common name denoting all Bulgarian folk costumes from the Bulgarian National Revival (1762 -1878) to the mid-20th century. The clothing reflected the characteristics, traditional culture and lifestyle of Bulgarian people. From an ethnographic perspective, its origin is mostly Slavic, however there’re also well-established Thracian and Bulgarian influences and shared specifics with the traditional costumes of neighboring nations as well - Turks, Greeks, Albanians, Vlachs, etc.

By their very nature, folk costumes were working clothes worn every day that through artistic decoration acquired a more festive look. Generally, our traditional clothes were distinguished by their exceptional practicality and widespread usage – for  work, business, errands, traditional rites or celebrations, etc. and were divided into: male and female, festive, visiting, working clothes and depending on the various  Bulgarian ethnographic regions, they were distinguished by their local specificity and originality as well.
