Since time immemorial, every year in early August, local families have gathered to chat and have some fun at the Ilinden Meadows, near the village of Gela in the Rhodope Mountains. The tradition has been kept alivetill this day and it has preserved the diversity of Rhodope songs. There’s an increasing interest in the contest. Crowds of people from all over Bulgaria flock to the Ilinden meadows. The number of visitors to the bagpipe contest varies from 8000 to 13 million per year.
