Ruse and the Nature Park “Rusenski Lom”

The free spirit of Ruse

The Danube flows majestically along the two cities. And the beautiful buildings and the aristocratic spirit of Ruse are very reminiscent of the fairy-land Vienna. The architecture and interior design of the unique buildings dated from 19th-20th c. are the work of prominent Italian, Austrian, German and Bulgarian architects. More than 260 buildings in the city are monuments of culture. One of the most impressive is the so-called Dohodno Zdanie (lit. Profitable Building). Today it performs public functions. It was built in 1901-1902 with a magnificent facade and figures on the roof, symbolizing art, science, agriculture, crafts, trade, defense and the free spirit.

The Danube city is linked to the free spirit. People here have always been open-minded to the world. And there is no other way - Ruse has been Bulgaria's gateway to Europe for a long time. And this spirit has been handed down for generations - back in antiquity, there was a commercial port in this place. With its functions as a shopping and transportation center, cultural exchange has always been taking place across the river. The free spirit is materialized in the Statue of Liberty, which is located in the city center.

Here, it is important to stop for a moment and seize the feeling of this place, to contemplate the quiet but powerful stream of the Danube ... After that, do not forget to visit the remains of the Roman fortress from the 1st century Sexaginta Prista. Today, it is an outdoor exposition. It can be seen about 50 meters from the northwestern wall and tower, the temple of Apollo and the headquarters of the military unit (Principia), six buildings. Traditionally, a visit in Rousse also goes through the Regional Museum of History, the Museum of Urban Life, the unique National Museum of Transport in Bulgaria, the Zahari Stoyanov House Museum, the Pantheon of the Revivalists, which keeps the remains of Zahari Stoyanov and hundreds more writers from the Bulgarian National Revival.

All of these are just part of the history that lives in Ruse and its surroundings. Nature also has a history, present and future are closely intertwined. Nearby are Rusenski Lom Nature Park, “Orlova Chuka” and “Dikilitash” Nature Landmarks, the “Doychov Island”, “Century Tserova Gora” and “Aleko-Telika” Protected Areas. There are important historical and cultural monuments on the territory of Rusenski Lom Nature Park and one of the obligatory places to visit in the region.

In the valley of the river Rusenski Lom, 10 km. away from the city is located the only active rock monastery in Bulgaria - the Basarbovski Rock Monastery. Its existence dates to the sixteenth century. Although it has been dysfunctional for a long time, the rock monastery near the village of Ivanovo impresses with its scale - it represents a whole complex of medieval rock churches. Today, they are united in an archeological reserve and because of the rare murals of the Church of the Holy Virgin are part of the UNESCO list. According to some researchers, the complex is from the 12th century and in its most developed period united 41 rock temples.

Among the curves of the Cherni Lom River, 30 km. away from Ruse, is the archeological reserve "Medieval town of Cherven". During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom it was one of the most significant fortresses. Here is the only preserved tower of that time in the country.

The Nature Park also preserves several important plant and animal species. Five are the most popular sightseeing routes, one of them is with a kayak. They provide an opportunity to get acquainted closely with the extremely rich biodiversity and historical heritage of this magnificent region.
